Mission Statement

The Foster Ocular Immunology Society is a charitable organization dedicated to the furtherance of knowledge, through research, clinical study, and education, of ocular inflammation and immunology.

History

The Foster Ocular Immunology Society (FOIS), named in honor of Professor C. Stephen Foster of Harvard Medical School for his contribution to the field of ocular immunology and uveitis, was established in 2003, but its history has dated back to the 20th century. In 1995, Dr. Ron Neumann, one of the leading authorities in uveitis and ocular inflammatory diseases in Israel, recognized the need of bringing ophthalmologists who are involved in the care of patients with uveitis and ocular inflammatory disorders together once a year at the annual meetings of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) to discuss the management of complex clinical cases in a less formal setting often present in meetings of other societies or associations. Thus, the precursor of FOIS was born. During the subsequent years, the Society has grown tremendously, with the formal establishment of FOIS in 2003.

Memberships to FOIS are limited to individuals who have completed fellowship in ocular immunology at Harvard as well as to distinguished clinician scientists who are invited to join. Friends and colleagues are invited to attend the FOIS meetings, which occur at the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology annual meetings.
